第九天：拆分組合 翻譯快樂---確定詞義

在了解拆分句子結構以后，更難的一步---確定詞義就到了眼前。這一步主要涉及下列情況：

1） 一詞多義

常見詞一般具有多義性，翻譯時要根據搭配和上下文確定意義，如develop除了“發展”的意思外，還有“形成”的意思，intellectual常表示“知識的”的意思，agree常翻譯成“認為”。

2） 詞組或固定搭配

詞組或固定搭配，一般有固定的譯法，翻譯時要注意，不能完全根據字面翻譯。
3） 看上下句確定詞義

有時，尤其是句首出現代詞時，需要閱讀待翻譯部分之前的句子，才能弄清句子的意思?，F在以前面的三個例子說明如何確定詞義。

例一，

72. “In short”, a leader of the new school contends, “the scientific revolution, as we call it, was largely the improvement and invention and use of a series of instruments that expanded the reach of science in innumerable directions.” (1994-72)

本句可以分四個意群確定詞義。

第一個意群：in short簡言之school學派contend 堅持認為，爭辯，討論

第二個意群：the scientific revolution 科學革命（不要譯成“科技革命”）

as we call it 我們所謂的（科學革命）

第三個意群：largely 在很大程度上a series of一系列instruments器具、儀器

第四個意群：expand拓展reach影響范圍；區域innumerable無數的，數不清的direction方面

例二，

72. How well the predictions will be validated by later performance depends upon the amount, reliability, and appropriateness of the information used and on the skill and wisdom with which it is interpreted. （1995-72）

本句可以分三個意群確定詞義。

第一個意群：How well the predictions will be validated by later performance。

how well字面意思是“多好”，用來形容動詞validated的程度，可變通為“在多大程度上”

predictions這些預測（predictions是復數，翻譯時前面加“這些”）

validate證實
